dumbo arts fest 2013

While this year's D.U.M.B.O. Arts Fest had some really great installations, it fell a little short compared to last year's.

We still had a great time though and glad we went.

This was pretty cool -- An image of birds on a telephone wire was projected onto several walls in the corner of a warehouse, and when you called the number at the bottom left, you got a recording of birds squawking and the birds flew off the wire in the projection.

super moon over brooklyn

not to be confused with the blue moon over brooklyn, i took this pic of the super moon from my roof on june 23, 2013.

snow in bed-stuy

i'm normally not a huge fan of snow. i don't mind it while it's coming down (snow globe!), and i LOVE a full on blizzard, but the aftermath of a typical snow in brooklyn is messy and depressing. the streets get plowed and create mountains of ice that block your car in, there are slush puddles of street runoff and garbage at every corner that freeze at night, and drifts on the sidewalk that at best conceal dog urine and feces, and at worst a dead body. (it's brooklyn, use some imagination.)

fortunately this past snow was the best possible scenario. it came down hard, and was wet enough to stick to every surface, seemingly defying gravity... and then, just when it started to get messy, the sun came out and melted it all away.

Atlantic Avenue Tunnel; The Oldest Subway Tunnel in the World

built in 1844, the atlantic avenue tunnel is the oldest subway tunnel in the world. a history shrouded in myth, speculation and blatant lies kept the tunnel a mystery until 1980, when it was rediscovered. partially renovated in 1982, it is now open to the public once a month for tours given by the brooklyn historical railway association.

to get into the tunnel, you have to climb into a manhole that's literally in the middle of a busy brooklyn intersection.
