cabo rojo salt flats, cabo rojo, puerto rico

natural salt marsh in the cabo rojo reserve

the salt mines in cabo rojo are possibly the oldest industry in the new world. salt has been mined in this location since the time of the tainos (native pr people), in the 15th century.

the flats are flooded with water from the natural salt marsh, then slowly evaporated. once they are completely dried, the salt is left behind and harvested.
