chris got some babies. i took she-ra to meet her new cousins.

while you were nursing your hangover this weekend, jason and i woke up early and went to help out at woodstock farm animal sanctuary in the catskills. this non-profit farm rescues abused and exploited farm animals. some are rehabilitated and adopted out to good homes while others stay on the farm longer.
the farm encourages visitors, striving to bring them face to face with animals and introduce them as friendly and loving creatures with distinct personalities while also explaining the cruelties of factory farms.
albie was rescued by the acc in brooklyn after he was found wandering the streets in prospect park. he was severely undernourished, had sores and lesions around his mouth, and his left leg and hoof were infected so badly that part of it was coming off and had exposed soft tissue. it is suspected that before escaping he was hog-tied, which is a common method for transporting young goats intended for meat. after many vet visits, wraps, and homeopathic remedies, his leg was unable to heal and eventually had to be amputated. here he is walking with his newest prosthesis!
clover was rescued as a 7 lb 3-day old after she wandered into a backyard in sub-freezing winter temperatures. she was severely undernourished, but is doing much better now.

asides from a few attempts at petting chickens at silver springs (our local zoo/attraction when i was growing up) and chasing them around our family's farm in d.r., i hadn't really had much previous interactions with these animals. but one of the tasks for the day was cleaning out their coops and shelters, and after only maybe a few minutes, i was amazed to discover that each of them have their own unique and distinct personality. they're very curious, as you can see from the pictures below, but most surprising; some of them are also very sweet and love to be cuddled! who knew?!
turkeys like to be cooled off on a hot day too.

jason with olivia, who was rescued after the house of the family whom she was a pet to burnt down and they were no longer able to properly care for her. she was full of stomach parasites when the farm adopted her, and as you can see from the photo, she's still underweight.

Super cute!!! I love your opening line, "as you were busy nursing your hangover...." I love that as I get older, there are much more amazing things to do with my Saturdays and Sundays than be hungover...
